I just recently came back from a vacation in San Diego. As we flew due east I saw a series of ovals on the southern slope of a mountain. I can't figure out what they are. And I cannot see them on an satellite images I have pulled up. When I go to Google maps you can barely see the faint outline of an oval, but if you zoom in closer it goes away. I think they are in the southern part of the Yuma proving grounds.
We flew due east from San Diego and were south of the Salton Sea, probably 4 or 5 miles on the US side of the border. Right over the bottom end of the Imperial valley. The area I saw the ovals in was almost due north of the California/Mexico/Arizona border. West northwest of Yuma Arizona. There were about 5 or 6 of them, some smaller ones inside others.
Any ideas?

They are targets for artillery. They have been there since WWII for tube artillery and have been used later for also missiles. The shells/warheads would just have smoke markers so the hits can be seen from miles away, but wouldn't destroy the rings.

I would love to agree with you, Pete, but I can't buy it. These are perfect four corner ovals. Not a single circle in the bunch. If you look down, they look like racetracks. Some are big, easily 2 or 3 miles in length (if it were a racetrack.) And others are much smaller, 1/2 or 3/4 mile. Some inside others. And there were probably 5 or 6 in a hundred sq. mile area. or smaller.

Landing markers for aliens?

The target aquisition was my guess. I did a Google Earth search of the area and they surely ain't there. How does an oval have corners?

In the Indy aerial pic above, each (curved) corner is a perfect 1320 foot arc. If joined together they would create a 1 mile circle. Turns 1 and 2 are joined by a 660 foot "short chute," as are turns 3 and 4. Each straight away is 3300 feet long. Add it all up and it is 13,200 feet or 2.5 miles exactly.
The largest of the "ovals" I saw appeared to be nearly this size. Maybe a little bigger or smaller. Hard to tell from about 27,000 feet. All of the ovals I saw were the same shape.

Hey Barb, now you are on to something. But no, this isn't what I saw. They were all separate, accept for one smaller one distinctly inside the largest of the bunch. And they were all nearly perfect in their shape, as I described above. What gets me is I clearly saw them from a plane, yet they can't be seen on any satellite images I have looked at.

Those are curves, not corners. A corner is two lines that intersect at a common point. Aren't I a pain in the ass?

Maybe the government got Google to Photoshop them from the satellite image. Whatever the reason, it's all Bush's fault. What altitude were you flying at?
