Hopefully the group in North Carolina will be successful in getting the Kitty Hawk as a museum.

That could really be a challenging venture due to the weather on the outer banks.

If some group on the east coast did get the ship, how would they get it there from Washington?

THis will be quite a venture :scary:being that KH is in Bremmerton and the group is in North Carolina. I remember when Midway was towed to San Diego from Bremmerton . I was told that it cost the Midway Group $1500 a mile to get it here. From Bremmerton down the pacific coast to the southern tip of South America dashing betweeen the islands and out into the Atlantic ocean and up north to North Carolina, say 9,000 miles. Seems to me it would be cheaper to fire up the boilers and sail KH there. But then again the Saratoga, Forrestal, and JFK are in Philly rusting.

MSN Search on your computer, Type in "CV-63 decommissioning" The KH stopped recieving on board mail on January 16 2009 and the KH website willl become inactive on the 29th. Folks around North Island have been very uninformed about the KH Decommissioning. I really firmly believe that the U.S. Navy did not want a lot of publicity on Kitty Hawk's Decommissioning.

There will be a former crew tour day on the 29th from 1000 to 1430 then the Decommissioning on Saturday January 31,2009 at 1000. the last crew member should walk off about 1215. see the first link in my orginal post.

I thought the JFK became a reef. Anyway, what about the Panama Canal? Then again, there is always I-44 with a jog south.

Here's Forrestal info

In 2007, the ship is currently being environmentally prepared for sinking as an artificial reef. Due to elements of the Forrestal design having led directly to current aircraft carrier design, the ship will be donated to a state and sunk in a deep water reef, for fishery propagation, so that it is inaccessible to divers. The date for the sinking has not yet been announced.

Saratoga

There, she was first placed on donation hold, then her status was changed to "disposal as an experimental ship", and finally she was returned to donation hold on 1 January 2000. While a hulk at Newport, ex-Saratoga, like her sisters, has been extensively stripped to support the active carrier fleet. There is an active effort to make her a museum ship in Quonset Point in North Kingstown, Rhode Island.

JFK

On 17 March 2008 at about 1700, she was seen leaving Norfolk Naval Station under tow of the Tug Atlantic Salvor. On 22 March 2008 Kennedy arrived, with the afternoon high tide, at the Naval Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility in Philadelphia. [12] She will be mothballed in Philadelphia until the Navy decides the final fate of the ship.

So ya know
